Where Is Jesus Now—and Who Lives in Us?

“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.”
— John 14:18

We say “Jesus lives in my heart,” yet the Bible also says He ascended into Heaven.
So—where is He really? And if He’s in Heaven, then who lives in us now?

These aren’t small questions. They draw us to the very heart of what it means to belong to Christ.

Jesus Ascended — and Still Reigns

After His resurrection, Jesus spent forty days teaching His disciples.
Then:

“He was taken up before their eyes, and a cloud hid Him from their sight.”
— Acts 1:9

This was not symbolic. The risen Christ, in His glorified human body, returned to Heaven.
He now sits at the right hand of the Father, interceding for us (Hebrews 7:25).
So bodily—Jesus is in Heaven.

The Spirit Descended — and Dwells Within

But Jesus had promised something before He left:

“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever…
He dwells with you and will be in you.”
— John 14:16-17

That promise was fulfilled at Pentecost (Acts 2).
The Holy Spirit—the Spirit of truth, the Spirit of Christ—came to live inside believers.
He is not a “replacement” for Jesus but the very presence of Christ made real within us.

Christ in You, the Hope of Glory

Paul wrote:

“If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.”
— Romans 8:9

and again,

“Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
— Colossians 1:27

Notice the beauty: the Spirit who indwells believers is called the Spirit of Christ.
So while Jesus reigns bodily in Heaven, His life fills us by His Spirit.
The same power that raised Him from the dead now works in us (Romans 8:11).

One Essence, Three Persons

Early Christians wrestled to describe this divine mystery without confusing the Persons.
Around the second century, believers began using a simple image:

The Father is like the sun, the Son like its light, and the Holy Spirit like its warmth — one essence shining in three expressions of presence and power.

The sun is the source (the Father),
the light reveals and makes the sun visible (the Son),
and the warmth is the power we feel and live in (the Spirit).

Different in operation, yet perfectly one in essence.
That image reminds us: when we feel the Spirit’s warmth, we are touched by the same glory that shines from the face of Christ.

The Comforter Within

Jesus’ farewell promise still echoes:

“I will not leave you comfortless.”
— John 14:18

Through the Holy Spirit, the risen Lord continues His ministry on earth—teaching, convicting, healing, empowering. The Spirit doesn’t draw attention to Himself but continually points us back to Jesus (John 16:14).

So when you sense conviction of sin, comfort in sorrow, strength to forgive, or courage to stand—
that’s the Spirit of Christ living in you.

He is both the proof that Jesus reigns
and the down payment of His return (Ephesians 1:13–14).

A Truth to Live By

  • Jesus is in Heaven, interceding for us.
  • The Holy Spirit is in us, making Jesus present and alive in our hearts.
  • The Father is above all, reigning in love and holiness.

Three Persons, one God, working as One.
The Father wills, the Son redeems, the Spirit indwells.
And together They weave the unbreakable bond that keeps us from ever being alone.

A Closing Reflection

Next time you step into the morning light, feel its warmth on your face and remember:

The same God who spoke light into the world now shines in your heart.
The Son reveals the Father’s glory.
The Spirit carries that glory straight into your soul.

“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”
— 2 Corinthians 13:14
