Cynthia Erivo, Jesus Christ Superstar…

But the Role Was Already Taken
A Scroll for Everyone Watching a Counterfeit Christ Take Center Stage

“She left Elphaba’s green skin behind…

but kept the spirit of defiance wrapped around her.”

At first, it was just a role.

A misunderstood witch. A rebel. A woman hated for being different, but turned out to be the real hero. That was Elphaba in Wicked—and Cynthia Erivo wore her like a second skin.

She sang rebellion beautifully.
She sold the narrative of the victim-villain twist.
She became the one who defied the system, broke the rules, and made us all applaud.

But she didn’t leave the role on the stage.

Somewhere along the way, she became the role.
And then she took it… right to the foot of the cross.

Except this time—she didn’t bow.
She stepped into the place of the One who hung there.

Cynthia, You Didn’t Just Step Into a Role.

You Stepped Into a Throne That Wasn’t Yours.

When you took on Jesus Christ Superstar—you weren’t playing the Risen Lord.

You were singing as a human Jesus.
A struggling Jesus.
A Jesus rewritten by Broadway to be… like you.

Talented.
Defiant.
Misunderstood.
Queer.

But He’s not like you, Cynthia.
He came to make you like Him.

“Who do you say I am?”
Jesus, Matthew 16:15

That question still stands.

What Does Scripture Say?

“God is not mocked…”
Galatians 6:7

“You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.”
Exodus 20:7

“They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!”
2 Timothy 3:5 (NLT)

This Musical Was Never About the True Jesus

Let’s be honest—Jesus Christ Superstar was never about telling the gospel truth. From the beginning, its creators were twisting Scripture to make Jesus a tragic figure, not the Son of God.

Tim Rice (the lyricist) even admitted:

“We didn’t think Jesus was God.”
BBC Interview, 2016

So what did they write?

  • A confused, emotional Jesus
  • A romantic subplot with Mary Magdalene
  • A gospel with no resurrection—only doubt and death

They stripped away His power and rewrote His mission.
Not to proclaim victory, but to stir sympathy.

But the real Jesus wasn’t confused.
He wasn’t romantically entangled.
And He wasn’t afraid to die.

What Scripture Actually Says:

“The Son of Man came to give His life as a ransom for many.”
Mark 10:45

“I lay down My life… No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of My own accord.”
John 10:17–18

“Now My soul is troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? No—it was for this very reason I came to this hour.”
John 12:27

Yes, His soul was troubled.
Yes, He prayed in agony.
But He was never hesitant about His mission.

He said clearly:

“For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world…”
John 18:37

So What Was the Goal?

The creators weren’t spreading the gospel.
They were repackaging Jesus to elevate themselves—
while being used as vessels for confusion.

They made a counterfeit Christ.

“For even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.”
2 Corinthians 11:14

And now, decades later, others are stepping into that same lie.
Not just for art.
But for platform, applause, and legacy.

The Real Jesus Is Not the Star of a Rock Opera.

He is not:

  • A confused man with an identity crisis
  • A gender-neutral savior who affirms every lifestyle
  • A helpless victim of politics and pain

He is:

  • The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29)
  • The Lion of Judah, who breaks every chain (Revelation 5:5)
  • The resurrected King, not a slain protester (Revelation 1:17–18)

Your role didn’t honor Him.
It rewrote Him.
And if you don’t see it—you’re not just acting anymore.
You’re preaching another gospel.

This Isn’t Just Cynthia. This Is a System.

Cynthia didn’t create Jesus Christ Superstar.
She didn’t write the lyrics.
She didn’t build the machine that lifts witches and silences prophets.

But she said yes to it.
She let it use her voice, her image, her platform.

And the system?
It keeps grinding.

It picks stars. Rebrands sin.
Turns rebellion into beauty.
Turns Christ into confusion.
And sells it all under the glow of theater lights.

It’s not new.
It’s ancient.
It’s Babel all over again.

And the same serpent still whispers:
“You will be like God.”

The Spiritual Reality: They Made a Deal

Let’s say it plainly.

Yes—many have sold their souls for fame, status, money, and influence. That phrase isn’t just metaphor.

“The devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.
‘All this I will give you,’ he said, ‘if you bow down and worship me.’”
Matthew 4:8–9

Satan is still offering deals like that today.
Hollywood just puts it in a contract.

So when someone agrees to play Jesus in a show that:

  • Denies His resurrection
  • Recasts His holiness as brokenness
  • Elevates human emotion over divine truth

…it’s not just acting.

It’s allegiance.

She Didn’t Write the Script — But She Said Yes

We’re not blaming Cynthia for inventing the lie.
We’re exposing that she agreed to embody it—and amplify it.

That’s not harmless.

“If anyone preaches a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.”
Galatians 1:8

And no one becomes a vessel overnight.
Roles like these don’t just brush past you—they mark you.

Something broke her pretty badly.

Maybe it was the hunger for fame.
Maybe it was pain that never healed.
Maybe it was a role she didn’t realize would open a gateway.

But something got in.
And instead of turning to the Healer,
she stepped into His place.

That’s not just miscasting.
That’s spiritual confusion—on full display.

As Believers, We Must Pray for Her

This scroll isn’t just a rebuke—it’s a call to repentance.

Because as long as she’s breathing, God’s mercy is still extended.

So we say this plainly:

Cynthia, if you ever read this—

There is still time to turn back.
But it won’t be on your terms.
It won’t be a performance.
It will be on your knees, before the real Jesus.

And for everyone watching?

Don’t be fooled by the counterfeit.
The cross was not a costume.
And the crown is not for sale.
